So, tomorrow I officially start my career as a Librarian with Day 1 on the job. I’m nervous, but that’s usual normal when starting any new job. I’ll be working with adults and mostly ESL type programs. I’ll also be occasionally helping out with teen programming.
I just graduated in May, and I haven’t worked in an actual branch library before, so my biggest worry is just trying to figure out my niche. I’m trying to get involved in activities all across the board, just to see what works and what doesn’t. I like working with adults, but whenever I sit down to plan events or programs they seem to always be aimed towards kids and teens. I’m lucky enough to work in a system where the lines are blurred with adult and youth services and librarians aren’t so territorial over their domain.
Hopefully by keeping up this blog and I can help myself figure out just where exactly I want to go with my career and what kinds of resources are available, especially for anyone else in the field that is just as confused about where to start as I am. Who would have guessed that being a librarian was so involved?
Good luck on your first day! I’m sure that in no time at all, you’ll figure out just what works for you and what doesn’t. I find that this job is constantly changing and that new opportunities arise all the time. Challenge yourself, but also give yourself time to learn what is expected of you. You don’t have to revolutionize your library in the first week, but don’t be afraid to provide new ideas, either. Pretty soon, they’ll wonder how they ever ran things without you!
