The ABC's of being a children's Librarian

Storytime theme – ducks

on July 29, 2008

So, tonight I am filling in for storytime. The librarian who normally does Tuesday night storytime is unable to do it tonight and she asked me to fill her spot. I can get more storytime practice this way. My only worry is that she gives really amazing storytimes, and I don’t want to let the kids down with my amateur skills.

I am planning on doing a Duck Theme tonight. We have a few duck picture books at the library that I plan on picking up. Now I just need to find songs and a flannel board story to go with it.

Title Selections

1. Duckie’s Duckling (Frances Berry)
2. Duckie’s Rainbow (Frances Berry)

6. Duck, Duck, Goose (Tad Hills)

Fingerplay and Song ideas

FINGERPLAYS

Six Little Ducks (from the Best Kids Website)
(To the Tune of: )

Six little ducks

that I once knew
(hold up two hands, palm out, six fingers extended)

Fat ducks, skinny ducks,

fair ducks too.
(wiggle fingers)

But one little duck

with a feather in his back
(hold up one finger)

He led the others with

A Quack, Quack, Quack
(hold up two hands, palm out, six fingers extended- one finger leading the other hand)

Down to the river

They would go

Wibble-wobble, wibble-wooble,
(press palms together, sway hands)

To and fro.

But one little duck
(hold up one finger)

With a feather on his back,

He led the others with a quack, quack, quack!
(hold up two hands, palm out, six fingers extended- one finger leading the other hand)

Quack, Quack, Quack. Quack, Quack, Quack

He led the others with a quack, quack, quack!

Little Ducklings
(To the Tune of: )

All the little ducklings,

Line up in a row.
(Stand up)

Quack, quack, quack,
(clap three times)

And away they go.
(walk in place)

They follow their mother,
(put hands behind like a tail)

Waddling to and fro.
(waddle)

Quack, quack, quack
(clap three times)

And away they go.

Down to the big pond
(make large circle with both arms)

Happy as can be.
(smile)

Quack, quack, quack
(clap three times)

They are full of glee.

They jump in the water
(jump up and down)

And bob up and down,

Quack, quack, quack,
(clap three times)
they swim all around.

All the little ducklings

Swimming far away.
(make swimming motion)

Quack, quack, quack,
(clap hands three times)
They’ll play another day.

SONGS

Five Little Ducks

Written By: Unknown, Copyright: Unknown

Five little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only four little ducks came back.

Four little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only three little ducks came back.

Three little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only two little ducks came back.

Two little ducks
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But only one little duck came back.

One little duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
Mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack, quack.”
But none of the five little ducks came back.

Sad mother duck
Went out one day
Over the hill and far away
The sad mother duck said
“Quack, quack, quack.”
And all of the five little ducks came back.
