Dear Peter Rabbit by Alma Flor Ada Illustrated by Leslie Tryon Age: Picture Book (K – 2nd) Publisher: Aladdin Paperbacks, 1994 ISBN: 9780689812897 Find this book at your local library
Told as a series of letters, Alma Flor Ada retells some of the most classic fairy tales. The stories of focus in this book are: Goldilocks & the Three Bears, Peter Rabbit, Little Red Riding Hood, and The Three Little Pigs. Letters go back and forth between Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Peter Rabbit and the Three Little Pigs, and the two big bad wolves. The letters begin with Pig One wanting to throw a house-warming party for his new house built of straw. Baby Bear writes a letter to Goldilocks inviting her over anytime.
The text is creative and really fun to read. The illustrations also do a fantastic job of highlighting the characters writing the letter. I also love the influence of letter writing between friends. With letters converted into e-mails converted into text messages, it’s really nice to see a book that promotes the long-last art of hand-written messages between friends. This is also a fun supplemental book when reading the classic stories in their original form. It’s a new way to look at it, and see just how interconnected these seemingly singular stories are.
