Little White Rabbit by Kevin Henkes Age: Picture Book (Baby to Toddler) Publisher: Greenwillow Books, 2011 ISBN: 9780062006431 Find this book at your local library
Kevin Henkes never ceases to amaze me. This picture book tells the take of a curious little rabbit with a large imagination. The little white rabbit imagines what its like to be green like the grass, as still as a rock, and to fly like a butterfly to name a few. The illustrations are in beautiful warm, pastel tones that are easy on the eyes. The text is used sparingly, and the pages that illustrate little white rabbit’s imagination of himself as one of the objects he ponders is wordless. The coloring looks like crayon shading, although it is actually colored pencil and acrylic paint.
I think this book is perfect for the baby to toddler age range because of the illustrations and the to-the-point text. A baby will have the patience to look through the wordless images. A toddler will appreciate the soft tones and the be able to put together the word and visual to unit the different concepts that are in this book, and even be able to start a conversation about what it is to be as tall as a tree, or as still as a rock.
