In Maria Carluccio’s The Sounds About Town, we go through an entire day with a young toddler, as he explore his local neighborhood. From waking up, to breakfast, and back again to the bedtime bath, we see, and hear all the different sounds that fill the town.

What I like about this book, is that it’s not in your face with the sounds and noises. The writing itself is very lyrical, which lends itself well to the theme. You can read this book multiple times and focus on specific noises. I like that the town is multi-cultural, the author includes “hello” in different languages. There’s the melody of everyday life, the snapping of jacket buttons, splooshing of the bath water, vroom of cars, ding dongs and knocks on doors, etc.

The pictures are also very well reflective of the noises. The actions match the noise that is made, which is another great way to introduce toddlers and infants to sounds in life. The colors are in warm tones, and are very soothing to look at.

There’s a chill outside; Mommy puts on my cap. She closes my jacket, snap. snap, snap.

The children at school will be going home soon. There’s the yellow bus, vroom, vroom, vroom.

This book would be perfect for baby storytimes. You can have the audience repeat the noises and sounds. Its a great book for a Spring theme, town theme, exploring and even more possibilities!
