Ready, Set, Read!

The ABC's of being a children's Librarian

Storytime Rhymes & Songs

If you see me highlighting picture books specifically geared towards storytimes, its because I’m now in charge of  3 storytime programs at the library. 2 on Mondays and 1 on Friday. All are baby/toddler storytimes.

I think for the sake of my sanity, I’ll be keeping virtually the same routine for all three since the kids are all around the same age. I’ll make a few minor adjustments here and there as I go along, but that’s par for the course with storytimes.

I have been doing baby storytimes since last May, and I finally feel confident with my routine. I still keep losing the kids attention when its time to read the book, I have no idea what to do for that. Even the interactive books with questions in the text don’t seem to catch their eye. I’ve started infusing more songs and shorter books, and so far that seems to be a good ratio. I have crowds as large as 80-100 in a room, so I think the lack of attention is mostly due to the fact that people just can’t see or hear the book. The songs, though, everyone can participate in some way.

These are my standard routines:
